Stromboli, is the northernmost island of the Aeolian Archipelago and is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the northern coast of Sicily. Its name means "round" in ancient Greek and in fact alludes to the shape of the island.

The island is divided into three main towns, Scari (San Vincenzo), the main town, Ficogrande and Piscità. It is also important to mention that there are two different ports on Stromboli: the main port is located in the northeast of the island, in the village of San Vincenzo, and Ginostra, a secondary port in the west. There are no practicable routes on the island that connect these two places.

During high season Stromboli Island (ports of Stromboli or Ginostra) can be reached from the ports of Sapri, Salerno, Naples Mergellina, Palermo, Messina, Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia, while from the port of Milazzo the connections to Stromboli are active all year round.

The ferries usually depart in the evening and there is also the possibility of staying overnight in comfortable cabins with exclusive access.
